The South Manitou Story
Gerald E Crowner2
The South Manitou Story The author joined the U.S. Coast Guard on his 18th birthday, and was immediately dispatched to South Manitou Island. During his two years on "South Island" (1927 & 1928) he grew to love the Island and its people. Crowner's remembrances ... of factual aspects, humorous anecdotes and touching moments ... are offered in a homey conversational style that readily takes one back to the place that was obviously so dear to his heart, and the islanders he knew so well. His wonderful book is essential to any Island library. [2.8Mb]

A Nationalized Lakeshore: The Creation and Administration of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Theodore J Karamanski3
All about the war to stop the park, and the cold war that followed. It took 21-years to pass legislation creating the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The process was not a pleasant one. Long time property owners, resorters and developers strenuously objected, and did everything they could to scuttle the proposal. For their part, government representatives were often lacked finesse, acting arrogantly and employing heavy-handed tactics to achieve what they understood as their mandate. The vitriol and suspicion that developed during those troubled times persists even today. Both sides have a story to tell, and their stories are evenhandedly presented in this well-researched illustrated history. [4.3Mb]
