GERALD E CROWNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Sponsored by
Manitou Islands Memorial Society
Empire, MI 49630
Award Amount:
$500
Application Deadline:
Saturday, July 22, 2006
Applicable Majors:
All Fields of Study
Purpose: As a young boy, Gerald E Crowner dreamed of serving in the Coast
Guard as had his grandfather before him. He and a playmate were familiar
figures around the Pentwater, Michigan Lifesaving Station. As a teenaged high
school student, he spent his summer vacations working as a Temporary
Surfman. As a young man, he was finally able to enlist, but only upon accepting
the only opening in the area ... an assignment to the Lifesaving Station on South
Manitou Island. While island assignments were not coveted because of the
remoteness and isolation, Crowner fell in love with the Manitou Passage and the
islanders. He eventually documented his experiences and affection for the area
in his monograph The South Manitou Story, a collection of essays, poems and
fond reminiscences. This award is made to honor his memory, and the things
that were so dear to his heart.
