MANITOU ISLANDS MEMORIAL SOCIETY OFFERS
GERALD E CROWNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Manitou Islands Memorial Society is now accepting applications for the
Gerald E Crowner Memorial Scholarship. Named in honor of the late Gerald E
Crowner, author and former South Manitou Island Coast Guardsman, the
scholarship was established to promote interest among young scholars in
preserving and interpreting the historic and cultural traditions of Michigan’s
North and South Manitou Islands.
The $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior or a post
high school student. Dependants of Coast Guard personnel can receive a
preference. In addition to the monetary award, the recipient will be invited to
participate as “Guest of Honor” at the Memorial Society’s annual events the last
weekend in July.
Applicants must write an essay, choosing one of three general themes dealing
with the importance of the islands and the U.S. Lifesaving Service, U.S.
Lighthouse Service and the U.S. Coast Guard to Lake Michigan’s maritime
history, or may submit an original work of art based upon these themes.
Application forms and guidelines may be downloaded from the Memorial
Society’s web site at www.manitouislands.org. Applications must be submitted
online on or before Saturday, July 22, 2006.
